I have two children, 16 mths and 2 mths. My husband has been at home with me and it has helped me out tremendously. He's going back to work soon and I'm not quite sure how to juggle the two. How do I keep my older child entertained but still offer attention to my youngest??? Any suggestions?
I would carry the two month old with me whenever I was playing with the 16 month old. Talk to your youngest while the other cooks pretend meals for you, has a tea party, or scribbles. I think you will find it much easier than it seems. The hardest part is getting rest and not putting too much pressure on yourself. I would also try to get them to nap at the same time once daily. It will give you a much needed break for sleep, chores, or quiet time.
Enlist your 16-month-old as mommy's special helper. She'll be thrilled to be able to help you out, but will also consider it to be part of her time with you. When you have to concentrate on the baby, you might try to give your older one something quiet to play with nearby. That may help.
Also, how do you feel about TV? I know this is a touchy subject for many parents, but programs like Sesame Street or those you'd find on Noggin are a real lifesaver when you need to focus on just one child's needs for a little bit. As long as you're close by to supervise, this can be a useful distraction.
