First Time Pregnancy

  • Hi my names Emily, this is me and my boyfriend Shanes first baby. It was sorta unplanned and I am 5months pregnant at first i was scared and didnt know what to exspect. But now I am fully excited, and when I feel the baby moving around it just makes me smile all over. Recently people have started tellen me that I have this glow to me, and it just makes me smile. Okay.. well my question is, i recently caught a cold and it hasnt gone away, i've had it for about a week now. I've heard from some people that its very normal to get sick while pregnant since being pregnant takes a lot out of you. What can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again. I have medicine but I still have the cold. Is there anything I can do thats safe at home. I've tried the steam, hot tea, getting plenty of rest, and eating lightly. Nothing works.

  • Hi Emily. Congrats on your new baby!

Unfortunately, there isn't very much you can do to prevent catching a cold. Pregnant women tend to have more sinus problems and this is the time of year when everyone has a cold. Be sure to take your prenatal vitamin every day and practice very good hand washing. Try not to touch your face and always wash your hands before you eat. It is also important to eat well and exercise if you are able.

It sounds like you are doing most everything for homecare. You can also safely take a spoon of honey for cough. Warm juice or warm decaf tea also helps with cough and chest congestion. Saline nasal spray works well for nasal congestion.

Be sure that if you develop a fever to call your OB. I hope you feel better soon!

  • I agree with BabyNurse. It's something you have to just get through. I have asthma, so whenever I get a cold, it turns into bronchitis. I got pregnant in April and delivered around Christmas. During that time, I must've gotten sick three or four times and was on antibiotics each time. My doctors restricted me to certain meds because of the pregnancy, so make sure you counsult with them before taking anything. Other than that, it sounds like you're doing all of the right things. Chin up. It gets better.
