I have owned the Ameda Purely Yours, Lansinoh Double Electric Pump , and Medela Pump in Style Advanced. I work in the healthcare field and returned to work after 12 week maternity leave and was able to successfully breastfeed of my children for a year. I prefer the Ameda and Lansinoh (they are basically the same, just different branding) as it is a closed system, meaning the no milk can flow back into the tubing and I like the bottle holders. I am currently looking into the Hygeia Enjoye as I like that it is the only non-commercial grade pump that can be safely used for multiple mothers. They even offer a recycling program! I just think that's neat. I am expecting my 4th and will be returning to work as well. Definitely use the hospital grade pump when you are there to signal your body to start making milk! Milk doesn't come immediately, and nothing may come out at all the first week or two. I commend your giving it a chance. You can do it!

I know it's a little too late, but I bought my pump at the hospital. It was a double-pump electric model and it works great. Plus, if you buy while you are at the hospital, the lactation specialists will help teach you how to use it. And, they bill your insurance directly. So I was able to get the $200 pump and only pay 20 for it since insurance paid the rest.

Medela freestyle pump!! I still pump exclusively with my 5 month old. Very convenient! Also buy one of those hands free bras. Motherhood maternity sells a brand name Simple Wishes. I love that bra. I pump 4xs a day and make 36oz. Definitely an amazing pump . Good luck!

I agree with PediNurse, a hospital grade pump is the way to go for at least the first month or so to make sure you have a well established supply. Renting one really isn't that expensive and the lactation conultants at the hospital can give you advice of where you can rent one. I had to pump since my son started in the NICU and only recently had to (sadly) return my rental. I own an Ameda Purely Yours which I do like but going from hospital grade to any market grade electric pump is night and day. The two definitely don't compare. The Medela Pump in Style is very good as well. Biggest advice, drink lots of water before and after pumping and if you are having issues with "let down" a bar of dark chocolate 30-15 minutes prior helps.

I also recommend the medela pump in style advanced. I received it as a shower gift from family. It was super easy to use, clean & transport. You can pump directly into the bottle and cap it for the freezer and I could pump in 10-20 min.

I have the Medela Pump In Style. It is expensive, but comes with all the bells and whistles. After a few weeks of pumping, I could completely empty in a matter of 6 or 7 min! Talk about much needed time freed up! Good luck!

I am renting a medela hospital grade pump. It's called the lactina and it works awesome! It's a double electric pump. I am renting it from WIC but you can rent them at a hospital or your doctor can give you ideas of where to rent one.

What you pay for with pumps is what you get - it really is to your benefit to rent a hospital grade pump from the hospital for a few weeks to establish your milk supply (this one does a much better job of it) and then use a high end breast pump like Medela Pump in Style to maintain. You will want to pump at least 8 times a day initially. Start out by massaging your breast and putting warm washcloths on them. Pump until your milk stream goes away. Take the pump off and massage again and hand express a bit and then pump till your milk is empty again. It should take about 20 minutes. This method will bring your milk in really well! One other tip is to make sure the "flange" or part that you put onto your nipple is the right size. All pump kits come with size 24 flanges but many people have bigger nipples than that. you should be able to fit your nipple into the opening with about a quarter inch of areola around. If you can't, talk the lactation consultant at your hospital about getting a bigger size. Okay - this went on way too long - sorry! Let me know if you have questions!

I am a bit confused...what type of breast pump do I get?

I was unable to breastfeed my first daughter after 3 days, I just couldn't relax enough to breastfeed my second daughter after 7 days and now I am pregnant with my third child and I feel that I just want to pump instead of actually breastfeeding, but what pump do I buy or rent?
