Congratulations! You’ve reached the halfway point in your pregnancy journey. Many of the discomforts of early pregnancy are behind you. Now’s your chance to relish all that is happening inside you.

This month’s guide covers:

Many moms in the fifth month report feeling happy, content, and excited. It’s a joyous event to feel your baby moving. His kicking means he’s strong. When he’s quiet, he may be sucking his thumb.

Your Pregnancy

As your belly expands, your back may ache. A good back rub can be a real luxury. Tell the father-to-be that we sent you! Send a hint to Dad.

Here’s what you can expect this month:

Physical Changes:

  • Most times, you’re feeling good.

  • You will gain about three-quarters of a pound each week.

  • Your breasts grow larger and softer, and the veins will begin to show. A clear white fluid, called colostrum, may leak from your breasts. A nursing pad (found at baby stores with breastfeeding supplies) can be placed in your bra if this becomes an inconvenience.

  • You can feel your uterus near your navel or just above it.

  • Constipation may continue to be a problem until the end of your pregnancy. Increased fiber, extra fluids, and exercise may help offer relief. If these don’t help, ask your doctor. Some iron supplements have the not-so-pleasant effect of causing constipation, and your doctor may have an alternative.

  • Your hair may feel thicker and more oily.

Emotional Changes:

  • You may be more emotional, cry easily, or have mood swings.

His kicking means he's strong. When he's quiet, he may be sucking his thumb.

Baby's Development

Your little one’s kick means he is strong, active, and growing!

  • Your baby will begin to move about a great deal. You will feel his arms and legs move. He’ll have active times and quiet times.

  • His skin is protected by a white, cheesy secretion as he moves in the amniotic fluid. His skin is wrinkled, red, and is filling out with fat.

  • His eyelids are still closed.

  • His fingernails are growing.

  • He is about 12 inches long and weighs about 1 1/2 pounds.

What Will Happen at Your Five-Month Checkup?

Your health care professional will check the following:

  • Abdomen, for baby's position and size to confirm the baby is developing as expected

  • Blood pressure

  • Weight

  • Urine

  • Height of the fundus

  • Fetal heart tones

  • Blood tests (as needed)

You're halfway through pregnancy. Wouldn't a back rub feel nice about now?
